Chachapoyas
The city of Chachapoyas is located in the Northern
Andes in the Department of Amazonas. Its name is based on the Chachpoya people, which refused to be conquered by the Incas. The main archeological treasure of this
culture is the spectacular fortress of Kuelap. They had a unique architecture style with rounded constructions
using plane stones and carved decorations on the walls of the buildings. This fortress was protected by huge walls with
difficult entrances that made an enemy invasion almost impossible.
The Chachapoya people had a characteristic way to mummify their dead. They put them inside of sarcophagies and placed them on the heights of
vertical inaccessable cliffs (e.g. «Revash» and «Karajía»). There are many mummies to observe
in a special acclimated room in the
Museum of Leimebamba. These mummies were found on the cliff beside the Lake of los Cóndores near the town of Leimebamba.
But there is a lot more to research about this misterious people. It is known that there is another city of the Chachapoya still hidden under the vast vegetation of the forest, the Gran
Pajaten. One more example of this powerful culture that left a lot of open questions for the researchers.
